As far the end of year, last thing in the plan is to make this a little more formal, that is, to let people know where they can find further information about how they can volunteer. We've got that out the door, we need to get that out the door as fast possible. People can check that out at theScienceFiction.org site, but if they're interested in doing more, they can email sciencefictionsignup@yahoo.com and check the boxes.
I know this was a very long year, and we've got a lot of people to thank for all of the fantastic things we've been able to do because of you. The U.S. Senate Finance Committee approved a bill Thursday that would provide $1 billion in tax breaks for a $1.3 billion expansion of the Chicago Cubs' $515 million indoor stadium, including a significant reduction in property taxes on the development.
The bill — which committee cleared by unanimous voice vote — also contains a series of provisions aimed at keeping money flowing to the project as quickly possible. Under the package of changes, developers would be allowed to buy and renovate about 2,000 surrounding lots for $5 per square foot — as long no one occupies those properties within the next 12 years. bill also would provide $100 million toward capital improvements for the ballpark, which began its construction in 2014.
The measure cleared committee after a day-long hearing with developers, city officials, school officials and area homeowners. Opponents of the stadium development say it will be a loss for neighborhoods and the city.
The stadium, biggest of three new projects the Cubs hope to move from Turner Field downtown, would be owned by the team but managed Department of Entertainment, a quasi-governmental agency under the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority. Cubs initially planned to sell naming rights for the stadium and adjoining complex, which would include a soccer stadium and practice facility run by the Bulls.
Illinois has long been a hotbed for stadium development and, with the Cubs as biggest project, has been a prime destination for developers. The ballpark was originally expected to open in time for the club's first World Series appearances in 100 years next year, but that goal was pushed back to 2018 because of construction delays.
According to a report prepared by team lobbyist for the state's public pension system, Cubs owe the state about $711 million for the project's construction, interest, cost of debt service and related costs, maintenance operations costs over the next five years, and improvements to the facility. report estimated team will benefit, on average, from 2.6 percent annual salary increases over those years and other incentives.
But the bond report included.
